Rotation - Core Set - 2023(Ver.15) (225 cube)
Hi, this is not meant to be used as an actual cube to draft from, so if you are looking for that I'd tell you to look elsewhere. This cube is meant to be a thought experiement for myself to try and figure out if I can come up with a Core Set that might be better focused around creating a more balanced environment for potential improvements after looking through MBT's Rotation format. Mostly because I'm of the opinion that the majority of his thought process was alright, but there was a bit of an issue with his setup that I am going to attempt to correct some of the issues I saw with his core set.
I will state that my core vision is slightly different, in that I believe that every deck archetype I come up with should have some way to access protection, a way to access a negate of some kind, and some internal way to access spot removal. I also only feel that Dark Magician should be the "Yugi-Boomer" deck, as I feel that adding Blue Eyes into the format only frustrates players as it is not a deck that can possibly keep up/unbrick itself without bringing in a half dozen draw/foolish effects that limit the potential available to the format.
Now, my two main goals for this version of the set are as follows;
- There must be a deck for each realistic summoning mechainc(Sorry Gemini). With those being: Ritual, Synchro, Xyz, Pendulum, and Link.
This is to provide each potential player a very different type of mechanic if they so desire. My picks for these are; Vendread
- All decks must be at a low enough power level that there is at most a triangle meta for tier 1.
I'll be honest, this is in direct response to the fact that Salamangreat is the only deck really worth playing in MBT's core set, as it is clearly the best deck. I just feel that there is a severe need for each deck to be strong in some ways but weak in others. I want there to be a good Combo Deck, A good Midrange deck, and a good Control deck in an ideal world but understand that I am probably not a good enough format creator to manage something like that.
However, I will state that I am unsure on the proper way to build a proper Yugioh Core Set(As I've only ever done this type of stuff with MTG cubes in my free time), so as seen in the title this is my "Alpha" Version of the set, I am more than willing to take any feedback about possible improvements. This is not for any specific reason, it is only here as a thought experiment.
EDIT (07/12/23): After doing some review I have come to the conclusion that I wanted to change a couple of cards in here as well as increase the total card count by at least a little bit.
OVERALL CHANGES
- Increasing the Card Count from 215 to 225: I'll be honest I wanted 215 as a really "Natural" number to end off on, rather than an actual number I should have been shooting for. I have since then reviewed the set and found myself wanting to add just a few more cards to allow for a more efficient suite of protection/removal for all decks, while still keeping the power level at a lower ceiling.
REMOVING
- Side Effects?: This one is my bad as due to trying to hit 215 cards for my first draft I did not read it carefully enough. I assumed at the time that your opponent gained the life, making it possible to play in Nurse Burn, but then on a re-read I realized it would just be a dead card in the set.
- Ebon High Magician: While I personally really like this card, I feel that it was not the proper thing to give to DM at this moment, as in general it also gave a bit too many answers for their deck.
- Extra-Foolish Burial: I'll be honest here, I thought it would be really funny to see if someone could come up with a combo to break it, but as has been the case for almost all of this
ADDING
- Forbidden Dress and Forbidden Lance: I feel that the addition of these cards allows for more efficient battlephase removal, while also providing some much needed protection.
- Trap Hole of Spikes: Because I was mistaken in how Side Effects worked, I am giving Burn another tool to play around with.
- Stardust Dragon, Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon, Formula Synchron, T.G. Drill Fish, T.G. Gear Zombie, T.G. Rush Rhino, and T.G. Catapult Dragon: While reviewing what I gave T.G. I felt that they did not have enough tools to allow the deck access to creating their Synchro monsters. As such, I have given them both a significant increase to their main deck monster count, as well as increasing giving them access to more extra deck cards to flex into.
- Dark Hole: However if I am going to give other decks more board building cards, there needs to be a balance with the fact that there needs to be efficient removal to those monsters.
