Inspiration for this deck came while I was playing a 60-card, going second OTK build of Skull Servant and realized how crazy the mill off of wightlord is.
A lot of the Wight OTK decks I play tested relied heavily on drawing into your board breakers on your first hand and then trying to shatter your opponent's board and OTK going second. Downside I saw to these builds was that if you didn't OTK on first turn you'd usually run out of resources in hand and mill a lot of the board breakers still in your deck into the GY off your wightlord mill so you'd get stuck with a bunch of dead draws/bricks.
Initially thought about trying to use the wightlord mill as an engine for paleo, but quickly realized the two builds don't have a ton of synergy and wightlord as a really effective mill engine would probably be too big for paleo. So instead tried to do the reverse and use some tricks from Paleo/Dinomorphia decks involving transaction rollback to maximize the effectiveness of the wightlord mill.
This deck turns those giant mills into card advantage by milling traps that either have powerful effects by banishing them from GY or traps w/ powerful effects that can be copied (cost-free) by activating transaction rollback in GY.
You can ignore the side deck for right now, those are just some other cards I'm experimenting with.
General Strategy:
- Same as other Wight decks. Dump as many wights into the GY as possible and then activate Wightlord to mill more into the GY -> Boardwipe opponent -> Special summon King of Skull Servants from deck using Wightprince or from GY using Wightlord -> ATK for massive damage and OTK.
- Sending Wightbaking to GY is usually the start of the mill combos for this deck. We got a couple options for this in this deck:
- From hand:
- Send as cost via: Forbidden Droplet, Twin Twisters, One for One, it's own protection effect
- Send as part of effect via: Card Destruction, Dark World Dealings, Uni-zombie, Gozuki, Knightmare Phoenix, Knightmare Unicorn
- From deck:
- Send as part of effect via: Foolish Burial, Gozuki, Uni-zombie, Immortal Dragon
- Bring to field then link away via: Rescue Hedgehog
- From field:
- Send as cost via: Forbidden Droplet
- Link away via: Relinquished anima, Salamangreat Almiraj, etc.
- Usually want to get Wightlord + wightprince off of wightbaking and then dump prince to send Lady in Wight + Skull Servant to GY followed by activating Wightlord to mill once you've sent as many wights to the GY as you can.
- If you already have prince or lord in hand you should grab whatever cards from deck make sense. Ex. grab King if you haven't used your normal summon and already have a lot of wights in GY. Grab Princess if you want a handtrap for damage reduction.
- You could also use the discard off wightbaking to get rid of a brick in hand (Ex. Transaction Rollback, Power of the Elements, etc.) instead of prince.
- A lot of the traps that we want to copy with transaction rollback are straight up bricks in hand. Fortunately, we can use cards with discard effects to get rid of them and/or dump wights + other zombies for their GY effects.
- Ex. Twin twisters, Forbidden Droplet, One for One, Dark World Dealings.
- Skeletal Dragon Felgrand and S:P Little Knight are good for spot removal of flood gates or cards that are otherwise hard to remove.
- The rescue hedgehog combo goes: Summon Rescue Hedgehog -> banish to get Wight baking + Skull servant -> Link Skull servant into Link Spider -> Link wightbaking + Link spider into your link-2 of choice (S:P Little Knight, Dharc, Vampire Sucker, etc.) and get the GY search effect of baking.
- Geonator Transverser - Seems like an odd choice for this deck but included it here after a few opponent's tried to steal king of skull servants. King only gains ATK based on the number of skull servants in YOUR graveyard. As a result, when your opponent snatches king, it's attack drops to 0 and it's basically useless. If your opponent has a boss monster or something you can't just smash with king you can use geonator to swap their monster with king and then use their monster to crush king for damage. Very situational but funny every time.
- If your opponent negates your king of skull servants, you can usually do the following to counter:
- enter battle phase -> attack their attack position monster with your 0-ATK king -> king is destroyed -> activate king's destruction effect and banish 1 skull servant to revive him -> unless you got hit by a called by the grave the negate should have disappeared.
- If your opponent negates your plays and you can't OTK then you can stay alive and interrupt your opponent via:
- Wightprincess - Helps fill your GY with Wights but also is a pretty effective damage reduction hand trap. You can also dodge certain negates (veiler/imperm) by chaining her quick effect to their negate.
- Rise to Full Height - Trick taken from Paleo decks. Use the banish from GY effect to minimize what your opponent can do during the battle phase. If they remove the monster you pick from field they can't attack.
- Primite Howl - Funny combo. Use howl to special summon skull servant when your field is empty. After howl is in GY, use it as an interruption to steal your opponent's key combo pieces during their turn. Funny because it targets a normal monster on your field / in your GY but it's monster-snatching effect is non-targeting. Also funny because skull servant has such a low ATK stat you can steal most monsters. Consider using it to steal an opponent's monster with a quick effect for more chaos. Ex. Steal a kashtira fenrir and then use it's banish effect against your opponent. Also this is NOT once per turn. So you can steal multiple monsters if you have multiple Howl in GY.
- Destructive Daruma Karma Cannon - Good on the field + can copy with rollback.
- Beelzeus of the Diabolic Dragons - Can't be destroyed by battle or card effects and gains attack. I use him as a barrier if I have to go first and I need to stall.
- S:P Little Knight - Self-explanatory.
- Balance of Judgement - You usually don't commit too many cards to the field so this can really help you recover if your'e down in card advantage. Can copy it via transaction rollback too.
- Boardbreakers:
- Lightning Storm, Evenly Matched, Destructive Daruma Karma Cannon, Eradicator Epidemic Virus, Transaction Rollback + Power of the Elements or Eradicator, Black Rose Dragon.
- Lightning storm + evenly matched can still be effective even after your first turn because this deck doesn't put too many cards on the field.
- Can easily get into Black Rose Dragon via:
- Uni-zombie (after you use his effect to increase his level by 1) and Wight-princess
- Uni-zombie (no level incrase) + Gozuki or Mezuki.
- Immortal Dragon + a level 1 zombie.
Other notes on card choices:
- No horus engine to reduce cost of deck.
- Cut out kaijus in favor of the transaction rollback part of this deck.
- Cut out wightmare completely because he was kinda a brick.
- Tried using Hope for Escape but rarely ever met the conditions for activation so copying it via rollback wasn't as helpful as balance of judgement.
- Tried A Black Goat Laughs but cut because I rarely used it + budget.
- I know rescue hedgehog isn't the most effective choice of starter because it's easy to imperm but left it in because it's a fun + budget option.
- Primite howl as interruption is another fun+budget option.
- Tried builds of this deck that utilize zombie world + some zombie pile support including Doom King Baerdroch, Eldlich, Vampire Fraulien, etc. Zombie World is a good floodgate and those other cards are fun but found it kinda took away from the OTK goal of the deck so I cut them. Might try to build a more "zombie pile" version of this deck in the future.
- Geonator Transverser is pretty niche / situational but always funny when I get a chance to use it. Included as a fun/budget option. Got the idea after seeing a GOAT format skull servant deck in action that used Creature Swap in the same way.
