Dragons. Among all the Monsters types in Yu-Gi-Oh, dragons are probably one of the most widely supported, alongside Spellcasters and Warriors, and as such have had several archtypes over the years that revolve around this subtype. Among those archtypes, two of the most popular historically have been Dragon Rulers and Dragonmaids, if you ignore the anime decks that heavily feature dragons like Blue-Eyes and Red Dragon Archfiend, and as it happens, these two archtypes synergize extremely well together. The "daddy" rulers ability to search for any dragon of their attribute when they're bansihed means it's extremely easy to gain acccess to the "maid" of your choice just by going through the normal Dragon Ruler combo lines, and likewise, their high levels means that each of them is a valid fusion material to summon Dragonmaid Sheou, one of Dragonmaid's key endboard pieces. When supplemented with a few other archtypes that work well with most any dragon deck, i.e. the Rose Dragons and the Bystials, you have the makings of a deck that can produce endboards with multiple points of interaction to stop your opponent and win the game. With that said, I'd like to highlight a few cards in this build that I think help the deck immensely and help put it over the top:
- Dragonic Warrior
- Probably the best Normal Summon in the Deck, Dragonic Warriror grants the Deck easy access to both Bystial Dis Pater, which can be a great combo piece on your turn by reviving a banished dragon for more Extra Deck plays and represents either a pop or a negate on your opponet's turn, and Arms of Genex Return Zero, which we'll get to in a moment. This is made possible through the Rose Dragon engine. Here's how the combo works, with the assumption that you have at least one "daddy" ruler in hand and one Level 4 or lower Dragon:
- Note: The chances of opening at least one "daddy" ruler, or being able to access one, are about 31% given that there are 8 "daddy" Rulers, 7 "baby" Rulers that can search for them, 3 copies of Dragon Shrine that can get one of the "daddy" Rulers into the GY, and the Dragon Ravine that can do the same, so there's a good chance that this will be the case. The chances of having at least one Level 4 or lower Dragon besides your first copy of Dragonic Warrior are about 36%, given there are 22 other cards in the Deck that meeth this requirement, so again it's quite likely.
- Normal Summon Dragonic Warrior. Discard the "daddy" Ruler and Special Summon Red Rose Dragon from the Deck.
- Synchro Summon Ancient Fairy Dragon (AFD); use Red Rose Dragon's effect to Special Summon Roxrose Dragon from the Deck, and use Roxrose Dragon's effect to add Basal Rose Shoot to your hand.
- Use AFD's effect to Special Summon a Level 4 or lower monster from your hand.
- The best case scenario for this would be Parlor Dragonmaid, as this would set up your Dragonmaid plays, and Chamber Dragonmaid would be a close second, as it too can set up the same plays with just a few extra steps.
- If you do summon Parlor or Chamber with this effect, this is where you should use them to summon Lady's Dragonmaid, as this will establish Lady's Fusion Summon for on your opponent's turn and get the effect whichever Dragonmaid you didn't initially summon while also providing another body that will be needed further along in the combo.
- Banish Dragonic Warrior and Red Rose Dragon to Special Summon the "daddy" Ruler from the GY.
- XYZ Summon Chasma; use Chasma's effect to send Redox to the GY, detaching AFD, and Special Summon AFD.
- Synchro Summon Bystial Dis Pater, using AFD and Roxrose Dragon.
- Link Summon either Romulus or Spheres, using Chasma and the Level 4 Dragon.
- If you want access to Dragon Ravine and have a decent discard for it in your hand, go for Romulus. If you need all the cards that are left in your hand, go for Spheres.
- Summon Redox, banishing AFD and other "daddy" Ruler in your GY.
- Use Bystial Dis Pater's effect to Special Summon AFD, and use Basal Rose Shoot to Special Summon Roxrose Dragon.
- Synchro Summon Arms of Genex Zero Return, using AFD and and Roxrose Dragon.
- Trishula, the Dragon of Icy Imprisonment
- Often considered a worse version of the original Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, this Trishula actually synergizes extremely well with this Deck. This is due to its easy-enough summoning requirements--uninterupeted, this Deck can easily churn out 3 monsters with different names, and the fact that you don't necessarily need a fusion spell to summon it makes it all the easier--and the fact that the Deck is comprised entirely of Dragons, so Trishula's effect will always be live.
- Trishula's effect to banish any card of your choice from your Deck also means that you can essentially search for over half the Dragons in the Deck through one the "daddy" Ruler's banish effects, while its ability to banish a card from your opponent's Extra Deck has the potential to severely hamper their ability to play through your end board.
- Arms of Genex Return Zero
- As noted above, it's an easy enough matter for this Deck to summon out this card, but what's the payoff for it? Well, given that this Deck plays every attribute in the game, excluding Divine which is never likely to be an issue, and can easily fill the GY with said attributes, it effectively means that you have the potential for 6 monster negates at any given time once this monster hits the field.
- It should also be noted that, if you haven't yet used one of the effects of one of your "daddy" Rulers and banish it to negate a monster's effect, you'll be able to activate its search effect, both interupting your opponent and netting you card advantage.
With the Main and Extra Decks addressed, I'd like to take a moment to explain the Side Deck and what exactly is going on there:
- Kitchen Dragonmaid
- While more dedicated Dragonmaid Decks often play this card in the Main Deck, there are two key factors that have led me to place it in the sideboard. First, while it is a Fire Dragon that is searchable off the effect of Blaster, in almost every circumstance I find that it's better to search Dragonic Warrior with this effect to be able to go through the combo described above. Second, in most situations, I find that Parlor serves the same function as Kitchen, so its presence in the Main Deck most often be redundant.
- Supreme King Z-ARC
- Surprisingly enough, it isn't too difficult for this Deck to Summon Z-ARC, given that you ideally will be summoning at least 1 apiece of a Fusion, Synchro, and XYZ Dragon through your normal combos, which just leaves the Pendulum Dragon requirement. This is where Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm and Odd-Eyes Revolution come in.
- Between the Dragon Shrines and Foolish Burial, it's an easy enough task to get Darkwurm into the GY to be able to use its effect to Special Summon itself and potentially use it to Summon Z-ARC.
- The downside of this is that Darkwurm kind of just has to sit on the field until you're ready to bring Z-ARC out, lest it be sent to the face-up Extra Deck if you use it for any other combo.
- The other option is to use Revolution Dragon's effect to search Darkwurm, putting it in the GY.
- With this option, there are now essentially two ways to Summon Z-ARC. You can either banish the necessary materials to Summon your "daddy" Rulers and then use Lady's Dragonmaid's Fusion Summon effect to shuffle them all back into your Deck/Extra Deck, or you can use the Dragon's Mirror to banish the materials from your GY, hence why it's also in the Side Deck.
- Although this all requires a fair bit of investment, the payoff for this isn't terrible. Going first--presumably during turns 2 or 3--Z-ARC is a massive body that can't be targeted or destroyed by your opponent's card effects that potentially can punish them if they find a way to out it. Going second, Z-ARC is a non-targeting total board wipe of all your opponent's cards--admittedly though, this is probably less relevant given that Z-ARC's necessary materials will require you to go through your normal combos uninterupted, which is highly unlikely when playing into your opponent's established board.
With all that said, the Deck isn't without its weaknesses:
- Nibiru
- This Deck aims to summon a lot, and although it is theoretically possible to get your Arms of Genex Return Zero out before your 5th Summon with the necessary Light in the GY, doing so requires you to specifically open Red Rose Dragon/Roxrose Dragon, Spectral, and another Dragon to discard and will eat up your Normal Summon, which is far from ideal and likely will cut you off from several of your other end board pieces.
- The Charmies
- Again, this Deck wants to summon a lot of monsters, and because it wants to do so from hand, Deck, Extra Deck, GY, and Banishment, all three Charmies can be problematic.
- Resource Management
- Between the Rulers and Dragonic Warriror requiring cards to discard to activate their effects and the "daddy" Rulers each requiring two other Dragons in either your hand or the GY to Special Summon themselves, you can run out of resources pretty quickly if you aren't careful, often requiring exact sequencing to make sure you don't run out of materials before your end board is set up.
Despite these weaknesses, the Deck is a lot of fun to play, and while I doubt that it would take down any major tournaments, it probably could snatch a few wins off unsuspecting duelists who underestimate the power of the Rulers and their Maids.
