I was thinking about what I would put in a hypothetical 2-player starter kit to get new players into the game. Reflecting on a lot of the criticism of the most recent 2-player starter kit in real life, I'm not sure that I agree with the idea of giving a new player a truly fine-tuned meta deck right out of the gate. Instead, I've tried to construct something that puts emphasis on the things that they should be focusing on when they start moving over to real games against seasoned opponents, by drawing their eye to simple 2 and 3 step combos that lead to easy-to-understand payoffs revolving around Dark magician, some generic rank 4's, and some small ability to generate generic advantage.
I've chosen to add a suite of 5 basic hand traps to get them used to the idea of handtraps and understand the situations in which you would want to use them or hold them. The intent is for each of these to have an ideal target that you would truly care about in the other deck that comes in this starter kit, and for that to be outlined to the players in the manual.
While many of these cards are not ones that you would run in a truly modern Dark Magician deck, a true DM deck would not give a particularly good first impression to a new player, as it would require a detailed flowchart to teach them how to pilot it correctly. Simple, short, linear combos with easily understood payoffs would be much more important than true optimization.
Most non-handtrap effect monsters were chosen for their ability to tutor or special summon for the sake of emphasizing how important it is for a deck to be able to special summon and tutor.
Super-Poly is to teach about non-traditional removal.
Silent Magician should be a good lesson about the power of negations in a starting endboard.
We're giving Pharaoh's Servant becase it will help the new player understand the expected power level of cards, and obviously, we want them to feel powerful as they're playing.
I don't care that magi-magi magician girl is a bagillion dollars. Reprint it.

And obviously the counterpart to this deck would be a Blue-Eyes themed one. Blue-eyes represents a bit of a challenge because it's an actually "good" deck. So we would need to restrain ourselves in building to match this one's power level.
