Yet again, another Charmers deck. This one is sort of an update on the "Experimental Charmers Deck", but much more focused on the Magistus archetype. Previously there were only a few Magistus cards in that Deck and Extra Deck (hence the "Experimental" term being used), but with an odd mish-mash of random other monsters that may not have blended well with the deck. Now the deck is quite a bit more refined for consistency. There are also quite a few techniques I figured out later that I didn't come across or consider in the previous deck. Also, now finally the cards have their proper English names.
The new additions are as follows:
SIDE DECK
Aditionally, there are a few asterisk cards in the Side Deck which I have found to be helpful at least a couple times. Necrovalley and Gravekeeper's Shaman especially should be kept in the back pocket for a rainy day. Gravekeeper's Shaman having 1500 ATK and 1500 DEF obviously makes it work well with the Possessed Spells/Traps. Obviously the main thing to be weary of is YOUR Graveyard, but they have come in handy for a few duels in my experience.
Apprentice Piper was an interesting discovery from about a month ago. Its effect can be overpowered for really any deck, depending on the monsters in your hand. The FLIP Effect lets you Special Summon ANY monster from your hand, but also when it's "destroyed and sent to the GY", you can also Special Summon a monster from your hand. If your opponent attacks and destroys the monster while its face-down, you can potentially Summon 2 monsters from your hand. Even if the Flip Effect gets negated, the "destroyed and sent to the GY" effect can still activate separately, and you'll still get at least 1 Special Summon.
Endymion, the Magistus of Mastery goes in the Side Deck in my personal opinion as well. Its effect can be great considering there are a potential 6 Spell cards and of course any of the Magistus Extra Deck monsters to use as cost for the "Draw 1, Shuffle 1" effect, but the other 3 Main Deck Magistus monsters are a bit more readily beneficial in this particular deck. Rilliona, the Magistus of Verre for example can simply search the Spell Card you need for the archetype, and Crowley, the Magistus of Grimoires and Zoroa, the Magistus of Flame have Special Summoning effects.
BRICKING
Let's get the bad out of the way. Unfortunately, there are still ways to have dud starting hands, and I have had a multiple turn dud hand before. The worst possible dud is to get 5 Charmer and/or Possessed monsters in your hand. Any combination of 5 of the following cards is the worst possible hand you could start with:
If all you have on Turn 1 is any 5 of these monsters, there is no possible combo you can pull off outside of a single Normal Summon/Set. That's the unfortunate side-effect of relying on Charmer monsters at all. Their optimal use is being reliant upon other support cards and other archetypes. TBH, the Awakening of the Possessed monsters are worse to have in the hand because they can just be Special Summoned from the deck without even being in your hand anyway (which Card Trader and to a lesser extent Endymion, the Magistus of Mastery in the Side Deck could be useful for, as in getting those monsters out of your hand in favor of a better card in your hand). Angraecum Umbrella is simply not great in your starting hand just because it requires a monster to be in your Graveyard. There are plenty of cards that can set you up for activating its effect in the starting hand, but if all you have is this and a bunch of Possessed and/or Charmer monsters, it might as well be game. Pretty much any other monster in the Main Deck however, can be used to set up at least some sort of combo.
POSSIBLE COMBOS
Aside from the dud starting hands, there are actually multiple ways to have great (non-meta) combos for a starting hand, with various pools of cards in the hand, whether going first or second. Here is an example of a Turn 1 combo:
Hand 1:
Sequence:
- Play Ichirin.
- Activate its effect to shuffle Hiita to the Deck, and add Inari Fire to your hand.
(You can use this as your first bait for Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, as they are likely to use it on either one of your spells or Rilliona, and this is the least costly) - Normal Summon Rilliona and use its Summoned effect.
(If they negated your Ichirin and you still have Hiita, then get Trismagistus)
(If they did not negate Ichirin, and you have Inari Fire, then get Magistus Theurgy)
Ichirin Negated Branch:
- Play Trismagistus.
- Activate the first effect to Special Summon a ⭐4 Spellcaster monster from your hand.
(Special Summon Hiita.) - Xyz Summon ⬛Rilliona, the Wondrous Magistus Witch Wardrobe (DEF), using Rilliona and Hiita as the materials.
- Activate ⬛Rilliona's effect by detaching Rilliona, to Special Summon a Magistus monster from your Deck.
(Special Summon Zoroa, the Magistus of Flame) - Activate Zoroa's effect to equip a Magistus monster from the Extra Deck.
(Equip Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden to Zoroa) - Then activate Zoroa's follow-up effect to Special Summon a ⭐4 Spellcaster from your hand or GY.
(Specail Summon Rilliona) - Activate Artemis's effect to add a Magistus monster from your Deck to your hand.
(Add Crowley, the Magistus of Grimoires to your hand) - Activate Spirit Charmers by discarding Crowley.
(Add either Familiar-Possessed - Eria or Wynn to your hand, then Set Awakening of the Possessed) - Activate Awakening.
- Synchro Summon ⬜Zoroa, the Magistus Conflagrant Calamity, using Zoroa & Rilliona as materials, then use its Summoned Effect.
(Equip ⬜Zoroa with ⬜Vahram, the Magistus Divinity Dragon) - Activate Rilliona's effect in the GY by banishing itself.
(Equip Artemis to ⬜Zoroa) - Special Summon Nefarious Archfiend Eater of Nefariousness from your hand using its Continuous effect.
- Special Summon Awakening of the Possessed - Nefariouser Archfiend from your Deck by sending ⬛Rilliona and Nefarious to GY.
- Activate Awakening - Archfiend's effect to Special Summon a monster from the GY.
(Special Summon Hiita) - Awakening automatically activates, allowing you to Draw 1 card.
- (Optional) Activate Crowley's effect by banishing itself.
(Equip ⬛Rilliona to ⬜Zoroa)
At this point you would have 3 monsters with a total ATK of 8550 (boosted by 600 ATK due to Awakening), a negating wall for all your opponent's Synchro, Link (and/or Xyz) monsters, plus a hard negate of any first monster effect they Activate next turn due to Ichirin.
Awakening also will prevent Hiita from being destroyed by effects, and ⬜Vahram also will prevent ⬜Zoroa from being destroyed by Spell/Trap effects.
If Awakening - Archfiend is sent to the GY for any reason (like by a Kaiju monster effect for example), you get to take out another Possessed Spell/Trap (preferably Unpossessed).
Additionally you would have an extra card in your hand to potentially further add to the combo, like for example, either of the Dogmatika monsters, which you could have Summoned using their effects, then Xyz Summon ⬛Ninaruru, the Magistus Glass Goddess, use its effect to add Crowley to your hand if you didn't use its Banish effect. Then discard your Eria or Wynn that you added to your hand earlier to Special Summon it from the hand. Activate Crowley's other effect to change its Attribute to WATER. Special Summon Awakening of the Possessed - Gagigobyte from the Deck by sending ⬜Zoroa and Crowley to the GY, then activate its Summoned effect to Discard 1 of your opponent's cards to give you ANOTHER Draw (and your opponent). Then use ⬜Zoroa's GY effect by Destroying Trismagistus, to Special Summon it back to the field. Then finally Banish ?Crowley to activate its GY effect, and equip 1 of the Magistus monsters in the GY to ⬜Zoroa.
THEN you would have 4 monsters out, with 900 boosted ATK and 2 potential extra Possessed Spell/Traps added to your hand, and still with the hard first negate from your Ichirin. The only question would be what Magistus card to equip to ⬜Zoroa, which at that point would be a gamble (Synchro, Link or Xyz).
You wouldn't be able to summon any other Extra Deck monsters due to ⬛Rilliona's lingering effect, but still you'd have a decent starting field with over 2500 ATK per monster and a high DEF monster. The obvious weakness would be something like a Harpie's Feather Duster.
Ichirin Resolved Branch:
- Activate Magistus Theurgy by targeting Rilliona.
(Equip it with Artemis from the Extra Deck) - Activate Artemis's effect to add a Magistus monster from your Deck to your hand.
(Add Crowley to your hand) - Activate Spirit Charmers by discarding Inari Fire.
(Add Eria or Wynn to your hand, then Set Awakening) - Activate Awakening.
- Activate Crowley's effect to Special Summon itself by sending Eria/Wynn to the GY.
- Special Summon Nefarious from your hand using its Continuous effect.
- Special Summon Awakening - Archfiend from your Deck by sending Rilliona and Nefarious to the GY.
- Use Awakening - Archfiend's Summoned effect to Special Summon a monster from the GY.
(Special Summon Eria/Wynn) - Awakening automatically activates, allowing you to Draw 1 card.
- Xyz Summon ⬛Rilliona (DEF) by using Crowley and Eria/Wynn as materials.
- Activate ⬛Rilliona's effect by detaching Crowley, to Special Summon a Magistus monster from your Deck.
(Special Summon Zoroa, the Magistus of Flame) - Activate Zoroa's effect to equip a Magistus monster from the Extra Deck.
(Equip ⬜Vahram to Zoroa) - Then activate Zoroa's follow-up effect to Special Summon a ⭐4 Spellcaster from your hand or GY.
(Specail Summon Rilliona from the GY) - Synchro Summon ⬜Zoroa, using Zoroa & Rilliona as materials, then use its Summoned Effect.
(Equip ⬜Zoroa with ⬛Ninaruru) - Activate Rilliona's effect in the GY by banishing itself.
(Equip Artemis to ⬜Zoroa) - Activate Crowley's effect by banishing itself.
(Equip ⬜Vahram to ⬜Zoroa)
