Introduction
My casual for fun build for ghoti with the new stuff from ALIN, it is still a 2 card combo and those 2 combo pieces need to work with each other. You still will get some awkward hands. Take it as an introduction to the archetype as I mostly play for fun with other casual players and my winrate is patchy.
They work now, they're not amazing, but they're probably up there with my favorites to play and cheap to boot!
The new support from ALIN does not really increase the ceiling - ok, maybe a little -, just the consistency of when you get to play and the amount of resources on rotation.
I'll try to sum up the deck, its strengths and weaknesess in a couple of bullet points:
- You need banish your tuners every turn
- You need to have resources in grave to cycle your lvl 6s
- The extra deck Ghoti are all trigger effects, as painful as it is, it is what we have
- After being summoned, your extra deck Ghoti are mostly beaters and bodies for the ghoti machine
- Chengying is the best Ghoti ever printed, White Aura Whale is a close second!
- You die to removal, the bodies need to stick, especially our level 2's
- Your Ghoti can be "stuck" in banish, be mindful on your resources in grave and even the amount of open monster zones
- It's a 2 card combo, sometimes 3. Hence, we can't fit much non engine or we are stuck not playing the game
- The engine can be restarted by the weirdest stuff that would be a resoruce drain in other decks (white aura revives, tidal, etc)
Thoughts on cards included
A couple of thoughts on why I play some cards and why you shouldn't play some of them:
Aspischool
The art is derpy, it makes one of my friends flinch upon seing that smile. Can be both a starter to get something else on field or an extender. In the past, a Psiics in hand was a dead card, now you get to play one of the best card available from the get go. Be mindful that the other monster summoned is banished upon leaving the field.
When summoning Psiics from banishment, banish Aspischool, Aspischool can be chain link 2 in the new chain and now your Psiics can't be ash'd.
Lifeless Leaffish
The old starter of the deck, the ash, veiler or imperm magnet. In a hand where both Aspischool and Leaffish are available, I'll say, normal the Aspischool and summon the Leaffish with the effect. I only play 2 as I often got multiples when played and 3, my opponents always, always has a way to stop it. But it fullfils and important role: to recycle or spent synchro ghotis.
Tidal, Dragon Ruler of Waterfalls
The more I play this card in the deck, the better I feel about it. It's a starter for awkward hands, admitelly, Tidal's presence can itself be the reason the hand is weird. But insofar, people don't expect to see it just casually restarting or kickstarting the ghoti engine as a byproduct of its summon. I used to play 2, I slapped a third copy, I love this card. It can also help theatening lethal more often.
Moray of Avarice
Feels good with Aspischool, before, you would need one Ghoti lvl 2, with Aspischool, you get the 2 cards and the body back. Arguably, can be cut, it is also a factor on weird hands.
Toxic Boxfish
Can start the loop or restart it if your Psiics is stuck in the graveyard or disrupt your opponent in their turn with the summon and banish effect. It is not unrealistic to trigger both in the same turn.
With Keaf on rotation, the negate can be recycled over and over again. However, I felt less and less enthusiastic about this card lately, you often want to kickstart the ghoti part and this guy can't do it on turn 1, the hands that allows it to shine requires you to already be playing. The thing is, we lack graveyard disruption, and this is the few ones that allows us to attempt to snipe a vital -singular- resource from the gy.
Number 37: Hope Woven Dragon Spider Shark
I'm sure there is a better rank 4 water that is not banned, but the intention is to crash and have White Aura whale come back after it has been dealt with, enfatically, White Reincarnation should be on the field so you get the Raigeki effect and double attack. And yes, you can cut it a play something that does come up more often.
Graydle Dragon
If made exclusively with the resources provided by mirror mage, it becomes a Pop 4 on summon. A must respond when it happens and either you get the full benefit or your opponent has to invest resources stopping/mitigating the damage. Also a 3k beater.
Navy Dragon Mech
Something to make with Tidal, send it back to the GY and get at least one slow negate out of the body. Think of it as Tidal's cousing with a 100 more atk.
Worldsea Dragon Zealantis
A Deep Beyond with restraint that is aware we want to banish only THEIR stuff, leverages the fact that Coral Anemone locked us into water 3 steps ago and we are about to threaten lethal with the fishes. Make sure Coral Anemone points at it to get the pops for any backrow.
What about [x] card?
Ice Doll
It does feel like a replacement for the white stuff, but not being fish does not really help and you're playing a deck with 2 different axis that may or may not work together depending on the starting hand. There's potential here to enable more rank 2 o synchro 4 plays.
They're neat cards, open up for possibilities. and you can also slap a blizzard princess and just ignore backrow.
Mermail King - Neptabyss
Before Neptabyss the last link in the deck was the link 4 Marincess Bubble Reef, with Neptabyss we get target protection to the zones it points to. Neat. Thing is, I got this friend that plays White Forest, they barely want target my stuff, they just flip it face down. The targeting protection is meant for the tuners as they're the prime candidates at getting disrupted.
Charmy's
Found some "cheap" Fuwalos but in an ideal world, it should be Purulia as it is water. If Fuwalos resolves you feel unstopable until they ash just the right thing. You want to play high impact interaction, droll, charmys, anything that trades of multiples or puts you forward to have enough effects to surpass the amount of interaction they might have.
Thing is, I hate droll and this profile is limited by what I find reasonable to spend on a card. Is the reason whyDominus Impulse isn't here yet.
Nibiru
You might have trouble outing the token if you can't get to your level 8's. As good as Nibiru can be, is not a water, is not a fish and can be the very thing that wins you and also losses the game
Now in main courtesy of my White Forest friend and that one friend that fires the entire orcust combo every time.
Swap Frog
One card Toadally Awesome in conjuction with Mirror Mage. That might be neat, but depending on your starting hand, Toadally might be your entire board if you just shotgun the Swap Frog on frame one of the game. You should probaly play some Nimbles to get the full benefit and at that points, is a whole different deck I haven't tried.
