Thunder Dragons are a fast tempo deck that excel at completely destroying and breaking an enemy board. You put so much pressure on your opponent and have so much interaction. I truly think this deck has a spot in the current meta as a threatening rogue deck. Against slower control decks you can easily smash down the fort. I have been subject testing this deck all Summer and I think I'm finally confident enough to share what I believe is the safest and most optimal build of Thunder Dragons
THUNDER DRAGON ARCHETYPE:
For those who aren't aware of how this deck operates. Thunder Dragons are a deck that revolve around discarding copies of Thunder Dragon and Thunder Dragondark from your hand, which will trigger the powerful effect of Thunder Dragon Titan . What makes the big bad Titan so terrifying is that it's not a once per turn, so you can keep discarding cards to Titan and just completely nuke your opponent's board! OR; you discard Thunder Dragondark and Thunder Dragonmatrix as a Quick Effect and start disrupting your opponent's board!
Thunder Dragon Titan also has protection, making him an amazing tank and not just a glass cannon. By banishing any 2 cards from your graveyard. Titan can protect himself from destruction effects, and once again it's not a once per turn! So as long as you have fuel in the graveyard. Titan can just keep protecting himself over and over.
Titan's sidekick and partner in crime is the equally frightening Thunder Dragon Colossus! Which is one of your best going first monsters. Preventing your opponent from searching their deck is a ruthless floodgate.
How to Summon Thunder Dragon Titan easily
Thunder Dragon Titan is summoned in 1 of 2 ways. The first is by loading up your Graveyard and Banish zone with 3 Thunder monsters and then using Thunder Dragon Fusion . The graveyard can easily be loaded up by discard Thunder Dragon . Thunder Dragon says "up to 2 copies" meaning you can discard 1 Thunder Dragon, and just get 1. Then repeat the process. So now you have 2 Thunder Dragons in the Graveyard and only 1 in hand. Now you just a Thunder to normal summon. Like Batteryman Solar (which puts more Thunders in the GY btw.) or Thunder Dragonmatrix .
Now that you've shuffled the 2 Thunder Dragons back into your deck. You can now use that 3rd Thunder Dragon in your hand and keep discarding it. Which will trigger Thunder Dragon Titan!
The second method is my personal favorite. It uses Ready Fusion to summon Kaminari Attack.
Thunder Dragon Titan has an alternative summoning method. If you have 1 Thunder in your hand, you can banish that Thunder and Kaminari Attack to easily summon him!
All the new main deck Thunder Dragon monsters also all have a secondary banished effect. If they get banished, they provide you with so much utility!
Thunder Dragonhawk is a free magical mallet. If he's banished, we can shuffle all our bricks back into our deck, then draw cards. And if we draw a copy of Thunder Dragondark, Thunder Dragonmatrix or Thunder Dragon, that gives Thunder Dragon Titan more fuel to further blow up the board!
Thunder Dragondark's banish effect is my personal favorite. As it's a free search for ANY other Thunder Dragon card. Usually you're gonna want to grab Thunder Dragon or Thunder Dragonmatrix.
Thunder Dragonroar is also very good. Allowing us to Special Summon a Thunder Dragon monster from the deck. And you can either bounce it to your hand. (If you do, special summon Thunder Dragondark so you can activate Titan during your opponent's turn) or use it as fodder. Because by having a non-Fusion Thunder monster. We can tribute it to easily special summon Thunder Dragon Colossus through his alternative summoning condition.
THE CHAOS SUPPORT
If you've noticed. All the good Thunder Dragon monsters love being banished, AND they're all either Light or Dark. Allowing us to fill up the remaining slots in our deck with powerful Chaos Monsters. Chaos Space allows us to not only put Thunders into the GY, but also allows us to search for our Chaos Monsters. I currently play 4 chaos monsters.
Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning : It's the best Light Chaos Monster you can search for. And while you usually want to search for a Dark Chaos Monster. Sometimes, you only have Darks in your hand. BLS also has a very relevant ability in the form of Banishing enemy monsters. Thunder Dragon Titan usually just destroys stuff. But what if a monster can't be destroyed by card effects? BLS has got you covered! It also has the potential for an OTK with it's second ability allowing it to attack twice.
Chaos Emperor, the Dragon of Armageddon : One of the best instant nukes in the deck. Armageddon Dragon also has some very sneaky wording. It doesn't destroy, target or banish anything. Its effect just SENDS things to the Graveyard! So it's another tool to kill proplematic indestructible monsters.
Chaos Dragon Levianeer : Probably the best Chaos monster. It's a swiss army knife of utility. If you only banish Lights, we can revive a Thunder in the graveyard, which we can then tribute to summon Thunder Dragon Colossus! Or if you banish only darks. You get the ruthless effect of disrupting your opponent's hand, if you get lucky and snipe the right card, you'll probably just win the game off of that. But the most common effect you'll be using is the mixed effect when you banish Lights and Darks. Which allows you to destroy any 2 cards. And this destruction effect doesn't target btw!
Thunder Dragonduo : A Chaos Monster that's also a Thunder. Which means you can tribute it for Colossus, or you can banish it from your hand to summon Titan. Past that, it has no real added utility. I like it because it is an easy, searchable Thunder monster. But you can easily replace Duo with any other Chaos Monster.
COMBOS
I already explained the go-to combos. But there are some less obvious combos that should be explained.
Gold Sarcophagus is really funny in this deck. Because we actively want to banish our own cards. So Gold Sarcophagus is just a more powerful Foolish Burial for this deck. Gold Sarc is also an effect that can't be disrupted by Ash Blossom or other common hand traps. The cards you always want to banish will be Thunder Dragondark or Thunder Dragonroar.
Normal Summons.
Thunder Dragons don't usually normal summon, but they have a few normal summons that can help you combo off.
Batteryman Solar , as previously mentioned, allows you to dump Thunders into the graveyard. Which we then will want to revive with Monster Reborn or Thunder Dragonhawk which can start a combo that eventually allows us to summon Titan and/or Colossus
Thunder Dragonmatrix is a funny normal summon. Because you can tribute it to summon Colossus.
BOARD BREAKERS & DISRUPTION
Your main goal with this deck is to break the board. But in 2023, it can be a little difficult. Monsters nowadays have so many abilities, and many of them can't be targeted or destroyed by card effects, which are problematic because your main form of removal is by targeting and destroying things with Thunder Dragon Titan. So the remaining spell/traps are here to specifically allow us to achieve our endgame goal of board breaking and destroying everything.
Dark Ruler No More is a card I've fallen in love with! This card is awesome! Allowing us to negate all our opponent's monsters is perfect for us! With no abilities. Thunder Dragon Titan is free to blow up anything and everything you want!
Effect Veiler and Infinite Impermanence fill a similar role as Dark Ruler No More, but only negate 1 monster, and there's no downside to them like Dark Ruler's downside of making all damage we do 0. And sometimes, you only need to negate the effects or 1 problematic monster. These 2 cards are also very good disruption during your opponent's turn.
Book of Moon is pretty similar to the previous 3 cards mentioned, its another way to "negate" monsters. It also helps us deal with gigantic monsters that Thunder Dragon Titan can't beat over in battle. Which can be annoying. I also just really really like Book of Moon for it's utility and disruption. It's also only an R on Master Duel, making it the best budget removal.
Forbidden Droplet is the last effect negate we use. It fills double duty of loading up the graveyard with Thunders and negating effects.
Raigeki can probably be replaced with literally anything else. You don't need Raigeki, but it has some useful moments. Raigeki is good when your opponent has a whole bunch of backrow. You negate all the monster effects, then blow up all monsters with Raigeki, and THEN we use Titan's effects to start blowing up enemy spell traps. (You can also use Harpie's Feather Duster and go vice versa. Nuking all backrow and then blowing up monsters with Titan. Use whichever you prefer)
The remaining cards are just some powerful disruption to stop your opponent from going full combo.
THE EXTRA DECK
Another thing I love about Thunder Dragons is that the only cards that're mandatory for the extra deck are Thunder Dragon Titan , Thunder Dragon Colossus , Kaminari Attack and Chaos Angel . So you are kinda free to play around with your extra deck and do whatever you like.
I personally loaded up my extra deck with more gaint threats (I just love giant monsters) that further fuel are gameplan of disrupting the opponent and/or board breaking.
Sea Monster of Theseus is here because it's a Ready Fusion target. And most of the Thunder Dragons you'll be summoning are level 5. Allowing us to go into Baronne de Fleur if we need to.
IMPORTANT
If you're gonna play this deck IRL. You should be playing Instant Fusion as well. Because unfortunately, it's banned on Master Duel.
Instant Fusion acts as a 4th copy of Ready Fusion and also has some neat utility. Allowing you to go into Thousand-Eyes Restrict and Millennium-Eyes Restrict. Which act as even more removal. If Instant Fusion is ever unbanned from Master Duel, I implore you, you should 1,000% be putting it in your deck and put Thousand Eyes & Millennium in your Extra Deck.
The "Sideboard"
Much like all my Master Duel Decks. The Sideboard is just a collection of cards that I recommend you use for specific matchups. Or to use them to fix some weaknesses with the deck.
Compulsory Evacuation Device and Get Out! are fantastic pieces of removal that I've used many times in the past for this deck. They're great because they get around indestructible monsters that can't be destroyed.
Thunder Dragonlord is another big beatstick you can use. It has the awesome ability to protect your Thunder Dragon Titan. Which is amazing! But the problem is, it's a Level 9, so it can't be searched by Chaos Space...
Sales Ban and Crossout Designator are used primarily to negate Maxx C and other frustrating hand-traps.
Speaking of Maxx "C", the only reason I've used this card is to allow us to draw more Thunders that we can use as fuel for Titan.
Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End is another giant nuke. Great for closing out games and good for banishing Thunders. I only recommend it because CED is an R on Master Duel, so it is much easier to obtain compared to Levianeer or Armageddon
GAMEPLAN
Going First or Second usually doesn't matter for Thunder Dragons. Both options are equally good for this deck.
Going First allows you to summon Colossus and Titan and then belligerently disrupt your opponent, denying them the chance to break your board.
Going Second allows you to break through just about any board.
Personally, I prefer going first, as I think it's better to have Colossus and Titan in play and put constant pressure on the opponent, never giving them any breathing room and denying every attempt they make to stop you.
Overall:
Thunder Dragons are an AMAZING deck that shouldn't be underestimated. Titan is not only a gigantic 3200atk monster, but it also has a spammable destruction effect. Colossus also puts in so much work, locking your opponent out of searching their deck can win games all on its own.
I highly encourage you to give this deck a try! As more and more cards get banned and unbanned. This deck will just keep on getting better and better.
