Summon Winda, the main goal of the Shaddoll Deck since its release of Duelest Genesis, and 12+ years later, that's still basically the goal. That said, the new toys the Deck has received in the intervening years, especially those provided by Glorious Gallery, have made this end goal far easier to achieve.
Now, you're probably looking at this assemblage of 60 cards and thinking to yourself that it's probably not any kind of serious threat. After all, 60 cards rarely work out in this day and age unless they're just a massive pile of syngergistic engines all cobbled together, but I'll ask you to keep an open mind as I explain some of my choices, inclusions, and exclusions.
- The Nemeses cards
- Because the main game plan of the Deck is to summon El Shaddoll Meshachrer through a combination of Squamata's send effect and Grysta's banish to fuse effect on your turn and El Shaddoll Winda on your opponent's turn by banishing the materials from your GY with Schism, you wind up with a lot of your resources stranded in your Banishment, which can be a bit annoying if you're forced to banish one of your singleton cards like Beast, Hedgehog, or Apkallone. The Nemeses monsters resolve this issue, allowing you to recur these resources and return them to the Deck while also providing you with the necessary typings to summon El Shaddolls Grysta and Anoyatyllis to help your Winda fully lock your opponent out of Special Summoning.
- Flag is undoubtedly the best of the bunch, being the searcher for the archtype, while Umbrella and Keystone...while not as strong as Flag...both have their utilities. Then, in Games 2 and 3, you can bring in Eschatos from the Side Deck once you know what your opponent's playing and lock them out of Summoning any type of monster.
- Sadly, Corridor didn't make the cut for this list, which is unfortunate because I think its ability to add back one of your banished Nemeses monsters would be beneficial. However, because the Wind Shaddoll fusions aren't as strong as the other elements...and because Lev Shaddoll Fusion locks you into specifically Shaddolls, meaning no Thunder Dragon Collosus...I ultimately don't think it's worth playing. If at some point in the future another wave of support gives us a better Wind Fusion or some method of making the existing ones more worthwhile to summon, I'd likely reconsider its inclusion.
- King of the Swamp and Fusion Substitute
- Because both Shaddoll Fusion and El Shaddoll Fusion have hard once per turns on their effect to Fusion Summon, there are situations where you can find yourself needing to bring out more Fusions from the Extra Deck but have used both spells and can't use them again until your next turn. This is where having extra, generic fusion spells comes in handy, and I find the King of the Swamp "engine" fulfills this role quite nicely.
- King of the Swamp serves a double function as both a fusion spell searcher and a Water monster to Summon Anoyatyllis, while Fusion Substitute allows you to return your spent Fusion monsters back to the Extra Deck and gives you an extra card to boot.
- A lot of Shaddoll lists I've seen choose to run Dracotail Faimena as their Water monster with Fusion capabilities of choice, but I'm less keen on this choice because the only viable targets for its actualy effect in the Extra Deck are Apkallone and Winda. To me, Apkallone seems like a better send off Lev Shaddoll Fusion...especially since its negation effect can't realistically be activated in response to your opponent's actions...and Winda seems like a better Schism target.
- I did consider running Mixousia the Confounder as a potential Super Poly target, which would undoubtedly make Faimena a better inclusion, but the Extra Deck is so tight that I don't know what I'd cut to include it. The most likely option is probably Elder Entity N'Tss, but I like having her as a Turn 3 send off a fresh copy of Lev Shaddoll Fusion to pop the opponent's Normal Summon and leave their field wide open for a direct attack.
- Small World
- Because the Deck boasts a wide selction of Types, Attributes, Levels, and ATK/DEF stats, Small World essentially lets you search whatever you need in any given situation.
- Small World also makes the inclusion of King of the Swamp, Umbrella, and Keystone a bit more defendable, as each of them can bridge into most of the Shaddolls through Mathemetician since King and Umbrella are both Level 3's and Keystone is an Earth. Here again though, Flag proves to be the best of the bunch as, provided you still have Falco in the Deck, you can search Armegeddon Knight, which is arguably the best starter in the Deck.
- Sol and Luna
- Admittedly, this is probably the weakest inclusion in the Deck, like everything else, it has its merits. Because all of the Main Deck Shaddolls are Flip monsters...and those Flip Effects can be as strong or in some cases stronger than the "sent to GY" effects...being able to flip them up/down can net your a fair bit of advantage, while flipping your opponent's Normal Summon face down means that...on top of not being able to Special Summon for the rest of the turn...they won't be able to attempt to beat over any of your Shaddolls during their Battle Phase.
- In opening hands that include Sol and Luna, making one of the last Shaddoll effects you activate be either Wendi's or Falco's means that this card will be live on your opponent's turn. Likewise, there are situations where you end up having your second copy of Construct stranded on the field with zero attack because you Summoned it with the effect of Lev Shaddoll Fusion, in which case Sol and Luna can help you reset Construt's attack and give you another strong body to attempt to leathal your opponent on Turn 3.
Of course, as is always the case, the Deck isn't without its downsides.
- Ash Blossom and Droll
- Big surprise, right, that the Deck that needs to able to search cards and aims to add to Hand several times doesn't little zombie girls and terror bird aficianados...not sure what kind of bird the Lock Bird is supposed to be, but it kind of reminds me of a terror bird, so we'll go with that.
- The Summon Locks
- While the new support from Glorious Gallery was undeniably strong and helps out the Deck a lot, the fact that both Tolshaddoll Grysta and Lev Shaddoll Fusion lock you into only summoning Shaddolls when you use either of them really puts a hamper on the Deck's ability to pair it with other Fusion based strategies...I get the sentiment, but can you imagine a world where these locks weren't included and you could combine this Deck with Invoked or Branded or both...Best Deck, anyone?
Overall, the Deck can be quite rewarding to play, and I'd highly recommend picking it up if you'd like to test your skills a bit.
