The October 3, 2022 TCG Banlist has been a strange ride, that's for sure. Spright takes a significant hit with the loss of Ronintoadin, making Toadally Awesome lines that much harder to accomplish. Not only that, its main competition in Tearlaments comes off the exchange relatively unscathed. Despite these setbacks, the deck still has some legs to stand on. Today, we'll be exploring the various Normal Summon options for the Deck that all fit into different variants. Let's dive right in!
Drowned for the Count
Variants: Pure
Before we look at the other options, it's best to pay respects to our dear old friend: Deep Sea Diva! She was the best Normal Summon for Spright hands down in their initial run during the release of Power of the Elements. This is because of her handy ability to lead into Crystron Halqifibrax! This fellow banned crusader made it so you could summon a Tuner Hand Trap onto the field to then be bounced back to the hand by Swap Frog! Not only that, but Halq summoning another copy also meant you could go into a 3200 Gigantic Spright which mattered a lot going second or in nasty game states. This play was also relevant against Predaplant Dragostapelia as Halq made it so you could still use your monsters that got turned into Level 1s by the Predaplant Counters.
Is all hope lost for Diva? Maybe not, but your remaining options for it aren't all that great. Exploring Herald of the Arc Light might be your best bet if you continue to walk the Diva path. Arc Light can decimate Tearlaments if well-protected, and I:P Masquerena or Spright Smashers can potentially get you there. There's also the highly controversial Yamatako Orochi for Baronne de Fleur which never really took off.
Nimble One
Variants: Pure / Power Spell / Tri-Brigade
There's a lot to love with Nimble Beaver and it's proven to be fairly effective even before the banlist! Beaver acted as a grind-friendly side grade to Deep Sea Diva and flexed its might in Power Spell Spright variants! This was because Halq and Tuner Hand Traps weren't used in that build, so Beaver's ability to revive from the GY was a lot more relevant as a stronger target to add back off Toadally Awesome. It's also a great pick in Adventurer Spright, as Nimble Angler can be sent off either Fateful Adventure or discarded by Swap Frog to summon 2 Beavers from the Deck! So what's our Nimble friend up to now?
Right now, Beaver is making incredible waves in Spright Tri-Brigade thanks to its ever-so-useful Beast typing and level. Even if it gets negated, you can still freely extend with the likes of Spright Blue and Spright Jet without any issues. So what does Beaver get you? Let's break it down.
Normal Summon Beaver and use its effect to Special Summon another copy. Make Gigantic Spright and use its effect to Special Summon Tri-Brigade Kitt directly from the deck! As an upside, you are now safe from Nibiru, the Primal Being thanks to Gigantic's effect. Link both of them off for Spright Elf. Kitt's effect activates, letting you dump Tri-Brigade Nervall to add Tri-Brigade Kerass. From there, use Elf to revive Kitt, banishing 2 to summon Tri-Brigade Ferrijit the Barren Blossom. After that, use Ferri's effect to bring Kerass onto the field and link her off alongside Kitt for Tri-Brigade Bearbrumm the Rampant Rampager. Use Kerass to summon Ancient Warriors Oath - Double Dragon Lords and lastly, link off Kerass and Brumm for Pitknight Earlie and get your Revolt search. That's pretty good!
Beaver will only continue to get better as the upcoming Spright Sprind in Darkwing Blast means sending Angler is an option the deck can get to anytime they wish. It's good to be nimble!
Reptile Redemption
Variant: Runick
Ipiria is quite the unique case, as it started out as nothing more than an anime pack-filler card released in Brothers of Legend: Hero's Revenge. Due to this, it's languished in obscurity for several years, up until now! That's right, this strange specimen has managed to find a home in quite the competent deck, being Runick Spright! Especially post-banlist, when they aren't going for Toad plays anymore.
So what's so good about Ipiria? It helps the deck slowly but surely snowball advantage, getting a card draw for free helps a lot when you want to be drawing into your Runick cards, and it also makes Hugin the Runick Wings' discard not sting as hard. Spright Elf also revives it for free on every turn, letting you get one card deeper into drawing your hand traps or Runick spells, which work on the opponent's turn because of Runick Fountain. PSY-Framegear Gamma's play rate is on the decline as it's a bit underwhelming vs Tearlaments, so that's another point in favor of Ipiria. In case you do run into it, you can just chain a Runick spell such as Runick Freezing Curses to summon Hugin and use her effect to protect your lizard friend.
V-Tubing it up!
Variants: Evil Twin / Evil Twin Runick
Evil Twin Spright is looking to be a nice option for the deck to go into post-banlist. it has two incredibly strong Normal Summons and also has a ton of space for multiple Hand Traps and defensives such as Enemy Controller or Cosmic Cyclone. Twins have two main versions they can pivot into. A concise package that focuses more on Live☆Twin Lil-la for Toadally Awesome plays or a heavier package that focuses on Artifact Dagda into Artifact Scythe.
The former is quite nice, as Lil-la alongside Live☆Twin Ki-sikil Frost can let you make Toad even before Gigantic Spright! Gigantic can also detach from the Toad to then let you go into Evil Twin plays later with Spright Elf. Elf acts as an honorary Evil Twin link, letting you make use of multiple draws and pops with relative ease. Between the draws from both Ki-sikils, the pop from Lil-la, and the power of Toad, you're pretty much set. Live☆Twin Sunny's Snitch even gives you a nice option to help combat time rules, as it can offset Starter or put you in a situation where the opponent is pressured due to the incidental LP gain and burn.
Scythe Locking is valid as well if that's your preferred cup of tea. That version trades Toad for some extra consistency as it also runs Live☆Twin Lil-la Treat to help extend if regular Ki-sikil gets stopped. Some brave duelists are also playing Evil Twin Runick Spright, which is relatively untouched by the banlist changes.
Honorable Mentions
Swap Frog still remains a decent option for people who can't get enough of Toadally Awesome, including me! Hard opening the amphibian gives you an easier time making Toadally Awesome as it dumps a copy of itself for Spright Elf to revive. Another play that Joshua Schmidt popularized is making use of Bujinki Ahashima! If you Normal Swap and dump another copy, you can return Swap to your hand and then pivot into Ahashima, which summons the Swap from hand and the one from GY, giving you an instant Toad. From there, you can use the Bujin Link-2 as material for Gigantic to free up zones.
I still recommend running Dupe Frog personally, as the purer Spright boards need all the help they can get, especially when this play now takes more resources. Sure you could argue for Super Polymerization, but no matter what the deck is in a catch-22 against it. I would much rather have my Dupe and Toad turned into Garura, Wings of Resonant Life than get my Toad and their Tear monster turned into Tearlaments Kitkallos which is much more dangerous.
Dupe also has the added benefit of helping a lot vs high ATK threats such as Dinowrestler Pankratops, and big dangers like Danger! Bigfoot! You won't always have access to Pixies, and having your small Sprights and the like be protected goes a long way, as the effect to get Dupe is free. If you hard draw it and have Sprights, you can just Normal it and have an easier time making Toad similar to Swap. For Darkwing Blast specifically, having Dupe solidifies your board against Kshatri-La Fenrir and the Bystial monsters.
Tri-Brigade Kitt will be your main Normal Summon in Spright Tri-Brigade if you don't open or run Beaver. Between Tenki, Fraktall, and maxing out on Kitt, you have good odds of getting to her. She works incredibly well in conjunction with the Sprights, as she can dump Kerass for Elf to revive. Elf also has the added benefit of making your Tri monsters less prone to Effect Veiler and Infinite Impermanence!
Gale Dogra isn't a traditional Normal per se as Runick Spright only runs 1 copy, but it technically works as an excellent NS on the rare occasion you open it, giving you a ton of value either with mills or draws. Just make sure to secure the Battle Phase, as your LP becomes incredibly low after resolving Dogra twice + Spright Starter. Play moderately fast as well, as you don't want to lose into time.
Dark Beckoning Beast can be useful if you want to lean more into Number 65: Djinn Buster plays as it does pack a solid negation effect and works well in tandem with Spright Red and Spright Carrot to get double the value.
Conclusion
That marks the end of our look into the various options Spright has for its Normal Summon. I hope this article proved useful to you in your Spright endeavors! Until next time folks, Renren out!
