In the OCG, the much awaited Animation Chronicle 2021 has debuted. It hosts a wide array of impressive anime-adapted cards to many elated players, but there is one I would like to introduce today. This article will explore how the potential of Piri Reis Map, and what it can navigate to.

Piri Reis Map
Normal Spell

  • At the start of your Main Phase 1: Add 1 monster with 0 ATK from your Deck to your hand,
and if you do, halve your LP, also you cannot activate the effects of cards with that added monster's name until the end of the next turn after this card resolves or until you Normal Summon a monster with that name.

Bluntly put, this adds 1 monster with 0 ATK from your Deck to your hand, but with several minor restrictions.

  • Your Life Points are halved.
  • You cannot activate effects of the added monster - until you Normal Summon it.
  • You must activate it at the start of the Main Phase 1.

But at closer look, these are actually very lenient restrictions. In fact, the restrictions lifts after the Normal Summon, allowing you to even activate the effects anywhere else after. The only negative trait about this card may be activating it at the start of Main Phase 1. This conflicts with Pot of Extravagance, but it should not pose a major issue. Beyond all these walls of text, Piri Reis Map is a simple consistency tutor card! As with every consistency card ever created, it will naturally boost several archetypes with its presence.

As a side trivia, the Piri Reis Map is an interesting piece of real history, and was used by Yusei Fudo of 5Ds in the anime.

If the Map Fits

I do not think any deck would be uneasy with any additional support thrown their way. These are several notable archetypes which would appreciate the addition of the Map.

Zoodiac

Zoodiac Ratpier

Zoodiac was performing extremely well despite several hits, thanks to AA-Zeus and the recently banned Zoodiac Drident. They may continue to serve as a meta contender due to its simplistic consistency and resilience, but I digress. Zoodiac Ratpier will be Piri Reis Map's only target in this archetype. The deck can perform with just any single Zoodiac monster, but Ratpier alone will accelerate the Zoodiac gameplan as usual.

D/D/D and Pendulums

D/D Savant Kepler

This section is dedicated to the loophole that Piri Reis Map has - "you cannot activate the effects of cards with that added monster's name." Who says you cannot activate this as a Pendulum Scale? Although this restriction may blank out Pendulum effects, being able to fetch a specific scale of choice is a very good deal. Pendulum Decks such as Zefra and Metalfoes will enjoy tutoring exact scales without a major backlash.

D/D/D however, remains the biggest winner from this card. The ideal target is D/D Savant Kepler which can tutor Dark Contract with the Gate, which in turn fetches any D/D/D monster. It is no stretch to say Piri Reis Map can tutor any D/D/D card from the deck! Aside that, Piri Reis Map can add Go! - D/D/D Divine Zero King Rage as a mere Scale 0, or D/D Savant Copernicus as another Normal Summon target.

Cyberse

Dotscaper

Many Cyberse decks can benefit greatly as they all share a common factor of needing a strong Normal Summon. The ideal targets are currently Dotscaper and Formud Skipper.

Dotscaper is now a current staple in any Cyberse deck, as its normal summon can produce a strong Cyberse Link 3, like Decode Talker Heatsoul. In fact, depleting the Life Point with Piri Reis Map can allow you to tap into the second part of Decode Talker Heatsoul to Summon another Link-3!

Even though Formud Skipper is purely a Cyberse, being able to tap into other archetypical names allows it to be much more flexible with everything else. Formud Skipper will adopt a different name with its effect, then retrieve the coveted Parallel Exceed, which can extend your plays substantially. All these from one single Formud Skipper! Piri Reis Map will allow you to see such a combo resolving more consistently.

Knightmare Corruptor Iblee is also a consideration against the beloved Nibiru. The secondary effect of reviving a fallen Link Monster may prove significant in niche games, but every additional effect helps.

As the Cyberse family will only continue expanding, this list may grow to adopt even stronger names to this roster.

Numeron

Numeron Wall

Very similar to Zoodiac, the whole gameplan will revolve around looking for one card. Numeron's singular win condition is Numeron Network on which their gameplan is established. Be it sudden OTKs, or deep drawing, everything revolves around tutoring and resolving Numeron Networks.

Piri Reis Map will tutor the only Numeron Monster, Numeron Wall. Thankfully, Numeron Wall can be activated on the field, so granting the Normal Summon to it is not an issue. The hefty costs from the map should not be problematic as well, as Numeron decks are notorious for concluding games within the turn.

Timelord

Time Maiden

Almost every single Timelord Monster has 0 ATK, can only be Normal Summoned, and potentially protects the player from direct attacks - what other deck fits the map as perfectly as this? Piri Reis Map belongs in this archetype much like Reinforcement of the Army belongs in Warrior decks.

Some Timelords like Metaion, the Timelord has seen itself as a specific tech against the Meta, so the map can serve as a reach into these monsters as well.

Off the Chart

This section belongs to other cards I would like to touch upon briefly.

Dark Beckoning Beast

The Sacred Beasts enjoy a repertoire of 0 ATK minions like Dark Beckoning Beast to jumpstart their games. This Engine can also summon Curious, the Lightsworn Dominion. The Blue-Eyes employs several mini 0 ATK sages to support their gameplan, like Sage with Eyes of Blue. Zombie World decks will be able to access Glow-Up Bloom more easily as well. Finally, like the Timelords, Duston is also another gimmicky 0 ATK tribe to play around with.

There are so many more monsters that fit the requirements of Piri Reis Map that I cannot do enough justice for by just mentioning them. My examples are only the tip of the iceberg, and I hope you readers are able to reach beyond my sights and explore further!

My Conclusion, Atlast

Piri Reis Map is another consistency card. Do we want more consistency cards? Of course! Although this card may not see much usage in the current competitive metagame, it wields an effect that could potentially be a part of when it happens. For now, this map will stay pinned on the wall, until the need arises.
